Texas vs. OU

Texas vs. Oklahoma Dallas, Texas (Cotton Bowl)
Game Review by Hammondeggs
One of the most anticipated games and historic rivalries in college football made its 2010 appearance on October 2nd. The game is so epic and the rivalry is so great, the two teams must meet at a neutral site: the State Fair in Dallas, Texas, at the Cotton Bowl. These two teams have been knocking helmets since 1900. Texas’ only longer rivalry is the game vs. Texas A&M that started in 1894. This game historically is always important in determining the Big 12 champion. The stakes are high and the tension is too as the fans anxiously await the two rivals.
Texas did not look good in the first quarter, allowing two Oklahoma TDs, one from Demarco Murray and one from Landry Jones to Kenny Stills. The life was put back into the Horns when running back DJ Monroe sprinted 60 yards for a touchdown, out running several OU defenders along the way. The first quarter ended with a score of OU 14, UT 7.
Another Landry Jones TD pass made the score 21-7 in favor of OU. All of Texas’ drives stalled but their defense held strong allowing no more OU scores before the half.
On the first drive of the second half, Texas kicked 22 yard FG making the score 21-10. After more failed drives by Texas and resilient defense against Oklahoma, the third quarter came to and end.
At the very beginning of the fourth quarter, Demarco Murray rushed 20 yards into the end zone, a dagger in the heart of the burnt orange faithful. Gilbert took control of the offense and lead a 76 yard drive that was capped off by a 5 yard Cody Johnson TD. The score was 21-17. Texas forced 2 OU punts and found themselves faced with a big decision, go for a fourth down within the OU ten yard line or kick a field goal and make the score 28-20 and make the Horns go for a 2 point conversion if they where to score another touchdown to even tie the game. In what most fans determined was a lapse of judgement by the UT coaching staff, the Horns went for the FG and played for the tie. Justin Tucker kicked the FG and made the score 28-20. The Horns defense stopped OU and forced a punt on the next drive. There was still hope for Texas. The punt flew into the air, and down into the waiting arms of Texas DB Aaron Williams. However, the ball went in and out. Williams let the ball slip through, a fumble. The OU kick coverage scooped it up, taking possession. The last glimpse of hope faded away. OU ran out the clock and came away with the Golden Hat.
POTG: (LB) Keenan Robinson
The star linebacker finished the game with 19 tackles, 10 solo and 9 assists. He had no sacks but he did tackle the running back in the backfield 2 times. Robinson has evolved into a leader of the defense in his short time at UT. His profile can be found here.

Gypsy Picnic

You probably know one of the big attractions of Austin is the food scene, and that aside from great restaurants we have the fun little food trailers.Well, now the trailers are getting more recognition- on November 6, 2010, The city of Austin will host it's first food trailer festival, The Gypsy Picnic!
It will be on Auditorium Shores from 11 am to 9 pm. So for a glorious 10 hours maximum, you have the opportunity to enjoy all your favorite mobile eateries gathered in one place. According to Tasty Touring, the festival will be divided into six sections- Outliers (or rovers) South Congress, Southside, East Austin, Downtown, and UT campus -according to each trailer's location in the city.
And it's not just a gathering of trailers, oh no, it's a trailer chef show-down. Each trailer pays $300 for participation in the festival, and each chef gets to all their profits from the day. Each will provide two to three items from their menu, whichever best represent them, and one smaller sample item- "a 'tasting' portion — at no more than $3".

Best Places to Carbo Load after Exercise

My colleague Aguti is currently in the process of writing a story about the trailer park eateries in Austin. I thought it would be fitting to write about some of my favorite trailers to eat at after exercising. Here's a list of what I view  as the best places to eat:
http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1440/843499856_731e694341.jpgTorchy's Tacos:
Though some people may say that this place is a heart attack waiting to happen I will proudly say that I ate Torchy's three times in the same week and haven't died yet. My usual is the Chicken Fajita taco, I can inhale it in about five minutes, but others like the Trailer Park, and the Green Chile Pulled Pork taco are also good contenders.
For more pictures and the menu that is beyond amazing click here.

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/94/243463349_936113be02.jpgFlip Happy:

This is the place that I would live at if my parents allowed it. Flip Happy has an assortment of crepes to satisfy anyone. There are savory crepes that can be your meal and sweet crepes that will make you want to buy more of them.
For pictures and the full menu click here.

Of course there are tons of other places to go and eat, but these are definitely some of my favorites, especially after I've exercised for a while.

Green Mesquite and County Line

Green Mesquite is Austin's own local BBQ and bluegrass headquarters. They feature local bluegrass and country rock names and also some national stars. The Green Mesquite is located on Barton Springs road right next to P. Terry's, another great Austin restaurant. When the people think of the Green Mesquite they think of Sholtz's Garden, Hogan's Heroes, dogs and kats, live music, great food, and great brewing. The County Line is known for having a pristine location on the lake out in the Hill Country. Everyday The County Line throws a couple racks of ribs on the smoker in preparation for the lunch and dinner crowds. The County Line is known for their BBQ, while the Green Mesquite is known for their Bluegrass music and artists.
When Mr. Hammondeggs and I visited the Green Mesquite around lunch time the UT fans were getting their fill of great Texas BBQ before heading to the game. When we walked in we immediately felt the bluegrass and country rock feel with the wooden floors and oak tables. We ordered the got 2 meat plate with sausage and ribs along with corn, pickles, beans, and bread.
I would give the Green Mesquite an A- and the County Line an A+.
Mr Hammondeggs would give the Green Mesquite an A-.

Texas vs. UCLA

Texas Longhorns vs. UCLA Bruins - Austin, Texas
Game Review by Hammondeggs

Texas and UCLA has played only 4 times since both schools started their football programs. The last game ended in UCLA’s 66-3 route of Texas in Los Angeles. This was not exactly a storied rivalry but it was always an interesting game historically.
Texas opened the scoring late in the 1st quarter with a 31 yard Justin Tucker field goal. That's the way the 1st fifteen ended, Texas 3, UCLA 0.
In the second quarter, UCLA quarterback Kevin Prince threw a 1 yard TD pass to Ricky Marvay, making the score 7-3 UCLA. It was Wyoming all over again, we where getting beat in our own house bu a team we ought to have been beating handily by that point.
A Texas punt led to another UCLA field goal and after Garrett Gilbert fumbled, UCLA kicked yet another field goal. The half ended with a score of 13-3 in favor of UCLA.
The first half was depressing for  a Texas fan. The offense never really got going. Garrett Gilbert showed his inexperience at the college level, completing few passes. I doubt UT fans where worried however, Texas historically has a slow start and gets much better in the second half. Alas, this was a time that went against history.
On the first drive of the second half, UCLA’s dynamic QB/RB rushing combo took over. RB Johnathan Franklin scored on a 11 yard run. The score was 20-3 and Texas fans where getting worried. The only slight glimpse of hope came late in the third. The offense started clicking, Gilbert completed a few passes and Texas found itself at the UCLA 17 yard line. The drive however stalled and Texas was forced to kick a field goal, UCLA 20, Texas 6.
On the ensuing drive, UCLA quarterback Kevin Prince faked the hand off to the running back and sprinted 38 yards into the end zone.
With 5:05 left in the 4th quarter, Texas scored a touchdown on a 5 yard pass from Garrett Gilbert to WR James Kirkendoll. Texas went for the 2 point conversion but failed making the score 27-12, in favor of UCLA.
UCLA scored another rushing touchdown and that's the way the game ended, UCLA 34-Texas 12.

Players of the Game: (Linebacker Emmanuel and Defensive End Sam) Acho Brothers

The Acho brothers, Emmanuel and Sam, each registered a sack and a tackle-for-loss in the loss to the Bruins. The had 7 and 5 tackles respectively, 6/4 of them solo tackles. Both of the Achos are consistently hard workers on every play and deserve recognition.
Sam Acho, the older of the two can be seen to the left.
