Thundercloud: Your local Sandwich Shop

Thundercloud subs

Thundercloud is Austin's own sub sandwich restaurant. There are shops in South Austin, Central Austin, Downtown, and in North Austin. There are two Thunderclouds within walking distance of my house. The most visited location is probably the store on Lake Austin Blvd. On any day during lunch time you will see at least 15 people either eating their favorite sub sandwich or in line ordering. My last visit with Mr. Hammondeggs was splendid. We received great service and awesome sandwiches. We also got a nice break after biking around town to find great spots to take pictures. I got the the large classic sub, "wich" had turkey, chicken, bacon, lettuce, tomato, american and provalone chesse, on wheat bread. My partner in crime Mr. Hammondeggs had a small meatball sub with american chesse on white bread. If I had to pick Thundercloud or Subway I would go with Thundercloud any day. I'd make that choice because I'm all about supporting the local businesses. By eating local and being the healthy person I am, I need a healthy meal after a long bike ride. I know my Mr. Hammondeggs would agree with me on that. People enjoy Thundercloud because it is a great and cheap. Plus Thundercloud sponsors "Fun Runs" in Austin such as the Turkey Trot. This shows that Thundercloud is supporting a healthy living style.

Texas vs. Texas Tech

Texas Longhorns vs. Texas Tech Red Raiders - Lubbock Texas
Game Review by Hammondeggs
If you are a University of Texas Football fan, you remember the fateful moment that Michael Crabtree sprinted into the black and red endzone with a second left in the game, dashing Texas' hopes for a national championship berth. Texas payed a visit to Lubbock last Saturday and they had a chip on their shoulder.
Texas looked unstoppable in the first half, not allowing Tech to get a first down. After a botched snap by Texas Tech recovered by Jackson Jeffcoat, Fozzy Whittaker scored on a 7 yard run. Texas forced another punt and one the next possession, thanks to some great passing by Garret Gilbert, scored a touchdown. Gilbert threw a touchdown to freshman Mike Davis. Texas forced yet another punt but on their drive, after a break down of the offensive line, a pass from Gilbert was knocked into the air and picked off by Tech defender Jarvis Phillips and ran back 88 yards for a touchdown. The score was know 14-7, still in favor of Texas. The Longhorns were forced to punt on their next drive and Red Raider quarterback Taylor Potts engineered an 88 yard drive which resulted in a touchdown pass to wide receiver Lyle Leong. Texas had gone from blowout potential to tied with Texas Tech at halftime.
Texas Tech wide receiver Michael Crabtree caught the game
winning TD pass in 2008, with 1 second left
The Texas defense tightened up in the second half however. They registered several sacks and quarterback hurries. Eddie Jones and Jackson Jeffcoat played very well in the second half, they were almost always in the Red Raider backfield. Texas scored a field goal and a touchdown from Gilbert to Barre Matthews.
With 3:30 left in the game, Texas Tech was faced with a 4th and 6. They had to go for it to have any chance at making a comeback. This was the game. Eddie Jones rushed through the Tech offensive line and caused Potts to through a bad pass. Texas took over on possession and ran the clock out.
The Longhorns had avoided another catastrophe in Lubbock.

Player of the Game: (Safety) Blake Gideon
Gideon had a lot to prove. He was, after all, the one who cost the Longhorns the game back in 2008, dropping the game sealing interception. He played extremely well, registering 6 tackles and an interception. It was evident that he had matured since he had come to Lubbock back in 2008.

Texas vs. Wyoming

Texas Longhorns vs. Wyoming Cowboys - Austin, Texas
Game Review by Hammondeggs

Texas Freshman WR, Mike Davis

It was finally here. The Texas Longhorns home opener at DKR Texas Memorial Stadium. The fans where in the stadium, the tailgaters where outside it and the lights where on. The people where ready for some football, all that was missing was the teams: the Texas Longhorns and the Wyoming Cowboys.
There where still a few questions after last weeks mere 17 point victory of Rice: can Garret Gilbert lead the team and can the defense step up in bigger games? Both of these questions would be answered at the end of the game.
The Longhorns got off to another slow start only scoring on a 45 yard FG by Justin Tucker in the first quarter and not allowing Wyoming to score at all.
In the second quarter, after another Tucker 36 yard FG, Wyoming quarterback Austyn Carta-Samuels rushed 18 yards for a touchdown making the score 7-6 Wyoming with 5:31 left to play in the half. The Texas fans groaned. How could Wyoming be beating us in our own house? Ah, but they spoke too soon. After working there way to the Wyoming 39 yard line with some great passing by Garret Gilbert, running back Fozzy Whittaker rushed 39 yards, breaking two waves of tacklers on his way to the end zone making the score 13-7, Texas. Order was restored. Texas stopped Wyoming on their next drive, forcing a punt. On the very next play from scrimmage, Garret Gilbert completed a pass to freshman wide receiver Mike Davis who spun around his defender and sprinted 45 yards into the end zone. Garret Gilbert had just thrown his first touchdown pass as a Longhorn. That’s the way the half would end, with Texas up 20-7.
In the second half, Texas’ defense held strong, allowing no points but Texas running back Cody Johnson scored 2 touchdowns making the final score 34-7 in favor of Texas.

Player of the Game: Garret Gilbert
Gilbert finished 22-35 with 222 yards, a TD, no sacks and no interceptions for the second week in a row. Gilbert looked much more comfortable today. There could have been many reasons, playing at home or lack of 1st game nerves but whatever it was, Gilbert played a lot better than last week, completing his first TD to Mike Davis. While Gilbert doesn’t have the hawk-like accuracy like Colt McCoy (not yet at least), he can certainly throw the ball and complete passes which is all the Longhorns need him to do this year as they have set much more store by the running game this season.

Texas vs. Rice

Texas Longhorns vs. Rice Owls - Houston, Texas
Game Review by Hammondeggs
Texas Running back Tre' Newton scored 3 TDs in the
34-17 defeat of Rice
The big moment is finally here. The day we have all been waiting for. The University of Texas Longhorn Football Team with a new quarterback at the helm, takes the field for the first time this season versus the University of Rice in Reliant Stadium, Houston, Texas.
There are many questions heading into this season. Will the defense be able to hold up in a competitive 10 team Big 12 after losing superstars like Earl Thomas, Sergio Kindle and Roddrick Muckelroy? Can Garret Gilbert live up to the hype? And of course most important of all, can the Texas Longhorns make it back to the BCS National Title Game?
The Horns got off to a slow start in the first quarter, allowing a field goal by Rice and failing to score from inside the 5 yard line on 4th down. On the ensuing Rice possession, however, Texas’ linebacker Keenan Robinson intercepted a pass thrown by the Rice quarterback. Texas would score a field goal on that possession to tie the game 3-3 at the end of the 1st quarter.
Rice missed a field goal at the start of the second quarter and after working their way down the field, Texas scored a touchdown off of a 1 yard rush by running back Tre’ Newton making the score UT-10, Rice-3 after the extra point. Rice would start their drive at the 31 yard line and after two rushes which netted -3 yards, Rice quarterback Taylor McHargue was sacked by Sam Acho and fumbled. Keenan Robinson picked up the ball and ran it in for the touchdown. The score was 17-3 with 6:24 left in the half. Rice would be forced to punt on their next possession. After a 31 yard pass from Garret Gilbert to wide receiver John Chiles, Tre’ Newton scored his second TD of the game from the 1 yard line. Rice would score a TD off of a tipped pass late in the half making the score 24-10 at halftime.
The 3rd quarter started with 2 missed field goals by Texas punter turned kicker Justin Tucker and a punt. On their 4th possession, after a 16 yard pass from Gilbert to Marquise Goodwin, Tre’ Newton scored a 3rd touchdown making the score 31-10. In the fourth quarter, Rice would score another touchdown and Justin Tucker would make a 2nd field goal leaving the final score 34-17 in favor of the Longhorns.
Player of the Game: Tre’ Newton
Newton is 50 pounds lighter than Cody Johnson, Texas’ short yardage back from last year but he was still called upon in the goal-to-go situations on Saturday, and boy did he deliver. Newton rushed 18 times for 61 yards and 3 scores. He looks like he may be the feature back this year for Texas, although they have a very talented poll to pick from.

Exercise Around Austin

With this beautiful weather and fresh air the season for exercise is beginning. There's events going on almost every weekend, if any of these sound interesting...register! Sure it's hard to cough up $60, but if you put in the effort to train you've spent a lot more than $60 in time. I, for one, am participating in the Women's Trek Sprint Triathlon on October 3rd! After training in the heat of the summer I am ready to jump into the lake and complete a half mile swim, then dry off with a 12 mile bike ride, and finish the job with a 3 mile run. Here's a list of all of the events going on in the next few months:
  • NAMIWalks- Changing Minds One Step at a Time
  • ASA Open Water Swimming
  • Stop Child Trafficking Now Walk
  • The SHORE- Rogue FAT ASS Trail Series
  • Trek Women's Triathlon Series
